In a world that is loud and adults prioritize our urgent to-do lists, it's easy for the voices of young people to get lost. But who is advocating for them? Who remembers the feeling of being overlooked and forgotten while adults focus on their important needs? It’s crucial that we turn our attention to these young individuals, especially those in the hidden corners of the world.
I recently had the privilege of meeting some incredible youth in Albany, NY, during an inspiring workshop. This event was held at the Frank Chapman Memorial Institute was organized with the support of Allie B's Kessie Williams and Burrell Bryant, was designed to uplift and empower the next generation by fostering positivity, confidence, and a strong sense of identity.
Impactful Work and Community Development
As an author and educator, I have always been passionate about community development and youth mentorship. My book, "Big Words to Little Me," serves as a social-emotional learning tool for girls and boys of color, encouraging them to embrace their unique identities and cultivate self-confidence. Through my work with organizations such as the Trayvon Martin Foundation, Jill Scott’s Blues Babe Foundation, and numerous colleges and universities, I have seen firsthand the transformative power of empowering young people.
Using my own transformative life experiences as a foundation, I aim to reach every young reader, especially young girls of color. One reader hailed my book as "a great book for helping Black kids develop confidence and self-esteem in a world that tries to destroy them daily."
By turning our attention to the youth and providing them with the support and guidance they need, we can help them realize their potential and ensure that their voices are heard, no matter how hidden or overlooked they might be.
Mentoring New Choreographers with NYS DanceForce
I had a wonderful time mentoring new choreographers in partnership with NYS DanceForce, a NYSCA Partner. In this space, we explored movement concepts as tools for healing and self-actualizing. Congratulations to Jackie Cherry and all of the grant recipients for their courage to create and explore.
